Recently, a Nigerian who lives in America named Nnamdi told me an all too familiar story about embarking on a project to build a modern 5-bedroom duplex in his hometown in Eastern Nigeria.

"It’s been my dream in the last 10 years to pull down the old house that my father built in the 80s while we were growing up, to build a modern 5-bedroom duplex.
“Majority of my friends and relatives have either renovated their old family houses or built new ones. So, I put money together and set out to Nigeria to start a building project in my village.
EVERYTHING WAS FINE
“Getting to Imo State, my goal was to get a good architect to make the design, and a building contractor to handle the project from start to finish.
"I got a few contacts, had a chat with each of them, and asked for their profiles and quotations. I chose the architect with a better experience and best price. Since his profile was impressive and his charges were not too expensive, I decided to hire him to supervise the building project. To be on the safe side, I hired an uncle who retired as an accountant to be in charge of the payments of labor and the procurement of materials.
THINGS GOT BAD
“Everything was going pretty well until the project got to the roof.
“After we were done with the roof, I asked them to put the project on hold until I come to Nigeria.
“I was at the site the following month, and found that so many things were not close to what I wanted. So we broke down lots and lots of things and continue to remodel my house.
“But progress got slower and slower, as more money flew faster and faster from my bank account.
“The closer I got to completing my house, the more I discovered that I had more things to fix or change.
I ABANDONED THE PROJECT
“Eventually, I got to a point where I showed the architect the door.
“I was on a deadline, I needed to complete the house and get back to work in America. But when so many changes showed up, I decided to leave the project for a while. The whole thing was in a way over my head."
